In his early years Frederick Douglas viewed the American founding with contempt, but as his intense study of history progressed he changed his view and came to understand that the Founders’ revolution set up the framework to end slavery and oppression, not just in America but around the world. The later thinking of Douglas was perhaps the major intellectual contribution of the abolitionist movement and the Republican Party.
